Diabetes ComplicationsControl over Diabetes is really about one thing. Avoiding complications. Studies have consistently shown that when blood sugar levels remain elevated it results in the bad effects associated with Diabetes. The advanced effects or damage from Diabetes can be controlled or curbed if a strong effort is made to keep glucose in range. Let’s take a look at some of the complications of diabetes that present a danger to all diabetics. Especially so for those who do not make a strong effort to control with diet, exercise, monitoring and treatment. Heart Disease Mankind alone without diabetes struggles with the plague of heart related problems. However the danger is greatly increased when Diabetes is a part of the factor. Diabetes uncontrolled can be directly linked to heart related problems like heart attack and stroke. In fact the ADA tells us that 66% of people with diabetes eventually die from heart attack or stroke. That’s a huge piece of the fatality pie for those with diabetes. Kidney Disease - Nephropathy The Kidney’s are the waste removal systems of the body. They keep the blood supply clean and filtered from polutants. When blood sugar levels remain high the kidney’s become taxed. Having them burdened at a prolonged period of time causes serious damage to them. The result is that dialysis or transplant is needed. Eye Damage - Retinopathy The eyes play an important role in everyday life. However eye problems and even blindness can be induced by diabetes. Those with diabetes have a greater chance of developing eye complications. However many studies have shown that greater control of glucose numbers lowers the chance of problems significantly for diabetics. (See Eye Care) Amputations Amputation specifically can be a problem with legs and feet for diabetics. One problem with diabetes or high blood sugar is they can affect blood circulation. If blood circulation is severely altered a greater chance of infection is present. If an infection is spreading in the body the need to stop it is presented. Diabetes can cause a host of other problems if left unchecked and uncared for. These are some of the major consequences that face diabetics for improper care. Our desire is not to scare anyone but to simply present the facts. However if this scares you into treating your diabetes with greater care then that is a good thing. These complications of diabetes can be controlled or even eliminated if good diabetes care is present. That is the advantage every diabetic has over diabetes. |
